Eligibilty
To pursue a course in this field the candidate is required to complete M.B.B.S. (i.e. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) course from any recognized university in India or equivalent. After the completion of M.B.B.S. course there is an all India level test for Post Graduation, qualifying which, the candidate becomes eligible for pursuing the course. Separate tests are conducted by some of the highly rated medical institutions like AIIMS, PGIMER, AFMC, Pune etc.
The courses in this specific field are MS in Orthopedics which is of 3 years duration, Diploma in Orthopedics (D.Ortho) of 2 years duration. Candidates with MBBS degree, who have registered permanently with Medical Council of India or any other State Medical Councils, are eligible to apply for these courses. One can further take up DNB, MCh in superspecialties such as foot and ankle orthopaedics, orthopaedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, adult reconstructive orthopaedics, musculoskeletal oncology, orthopaedic spine surgery, hand surgery, orthopaedic trauma etc.
Job Prospects
There is lots of scope in the field of orthopedics in India as well as in abroad. Graduates after completion of the course can seek jobs in the health care sector such as therapist, doctors, surgeon, nurse and so on. Professionals in this career can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges. Skilled professionals with some experience can also start his/her own hospital or nursing homes.
