Orthopaedics

An orthopaedist  deals with diseases connected to skeletal system. Orthopedics is that branch of medicine that deals with the correction of deformities and prevention of disorders in joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, all bones and bony tissue.

Orthopaedics is a specialty of immense breadth and variety. Orthopaedic surgeons treat a wide variety of diseases and conditions, including:

• fractures and dislocations
• torn ligaments, sprains, and strains
• tendon injuries, pulled muscles, and bursitis
• ruptured disks, sciatica, low back pain, and scoliosis
• knock knees, bow legs, bunions, and hammer toes
• arthritis and osteoporosis
• bone tumors, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy
• club foot and unequal leg length
• abnormalities of the fingers and toes and growth abnormalities

Eligibilty

To pursue a course in this field the candidate is required to complete M.B.B.S. (i.e. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) course from any recognized university in India or equivalent. After the completion of M.B.B.S. course there is an all India level test for Post Graduation, qualifying which, the candidate becomes eligible for pursuing the course. Separate tests are conducted by some of the highly rated medical institutions like AIIMS, PGIMER, AFMC, Pune etc.
The courses in this specific field are MS in Orthopedics which is of 3 years duration, Diploma in Orthopedics (D.Ortho) of 2 years duration. Candidates with MBBS degree, who have registered permanently with Medical Council of India or any other State Medical Councils, are eligible to apply for these courses. One can further take up DNB, MCh in superspecialties such as foot and ankle orthopaedics, orthopaedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, adult reconstructive orthopaedics, musculoskeletal oncology, orthopaedic spine surgery, hand surgery, orthopaedic trauma etc.

Job Prospects

There is lots of scope in the field of orthopedics in India as well as in abroad. Graduates after completion of the course can seek jobs in the health care sector such as therapist, doctors, surgeon, nurse and so on. Professionals in this career can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges. Skilled professionals with some experience can also start his/her own hospital or nursing homes. This helps them to gain the confidence as well as revenue.
Graduates can also join naval or army forces depending upon his/her choice by checking the advertisements which appear in the newspaper. Skilled professionals working in this sector can earn  a good remuneration. Renumeration:

An Orthopaedic Surgeon in the initial stage gets a handsome salary of Rs. 20,000 to 25,000 per month. However, those at the senior level may get salary package around Rs.15 lakhs to Rs.20 lakhs per annum. Those working with hospitals and other government and private sectors, may get lucrative benefits like incentives, paid holidays, free insurance etc. Surgeons who specialize in spine surgery deserve the high salary range they receive, as the stress levels associated with their job is high.
