Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College was established in the year 1963 by KLE (Karnatak Lingayat Education) Society. The college is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the Medical Council of India. It is one of the top twenty colleges in India.

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum is a unit of KLE University and it has been granted the deemed University status by UGC. The college is also recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council and listed in WHO World Directory of Medical Schools.

The college has collaborations with University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Vanderbilt University and University of Alabama at Birmingham for teaching and research.

1400 bed KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital,  provides  free health care in basic specialities to the poor.  1000 bed Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre provides  cost effective  superspeciality health care services in cardio thoracic & vascular surgery, cardiology, urology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, paediatric surgery, cardiac anaesthesiology, nephrology, gastro eneterology, oncology, laparoscopic surgery, diabetology etc . The medical students are   exposed to a holistic approach to the full spectrum of science and art of modern medical practice in low as well as high resource settings. This is one of the largest hospitals with 2400 beds under one roof. There are 26 major operation theatres and 240 ICU beds.
