MDS in Public Health Dentistry

M. D. S. in Public Health Dentistry is a three year Postgraduate program. The branch of Public Health Dentistry deals with more of general dentistry at the out-reach levels and also with research on oral health care.

This program trains the students in prevention and control of dental disease and promotion of dental health through organized community efforts.After completion of the course one can practice jobs in government and private dental institutions, hospitals, healthcare panels of different companies.

M.D.S. Public Health Dentistry or Masters in Dental Surgery in Public Health Dentistry is a three year postgraduate Dentistry course.  The Course focuses on preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. Public health dentists promote oral health by assessing the oral health needs of the community, developing and implementing oral health policy, and providing programs and services that address oral health issues. The course is an important one that provides jobs in many fields after the completion of the course.

Eligibility:                       

  • BDS with minimum 55% marks
  • Some reputed colleges and institutes do conduct entrance examination to get admission to Degree course.

Public Health Dentist Job Description:

  • Remove decay from teeth and fix cavities
  • Repair any cracked or damaged teeth; remove teeth
  • Straighten teeth to correct bite problems
  • Put sealants over teeth
  • Provide anesthetics to stop patients from feeling pain during procedures
  • Write prescriptions for drugs, such as antibiotics
  • Teach needy communities about diet, flossing, fluoride use and other important parts of basic dental care.

Salary:

The salary  is based on factors- such as skill and work experience, education level, type of employment and the geographical area. A fresher in the field can earn Rs. 9,000 upwards. Dental surgeons can earn good money through their own practice. The consultation charges could be Rs.500 upwards. They can even charge depending upon the nature of dental problem the patient is undergoing. Even for simple case of a wisdom teeth, Oral maxillofacial surgeon charge Rs. 2000 and above. A well established dentist can make around Rs. 60,000 - 1,00,000 or more per month.
