MDS in Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of Dentistry that deals with correction of tooth and jaw misplacements in children and adults, thereby, improving esthetics along with function.

Orthodontia, also known as orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, was the first specialty created in the field of dentistry. An orthodontist is a specialist who has undergone special training in a dental school or college after he/she has graduated in dentistry. It was established by the efforts of pioneering orthodontists such as Edward Angle and Norman William Kingsley. The specialty deals primarily with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and the jaws. Also commonly known as specialized dentists for braces.

In India, many dental colleges affiliated to universities offer orthodontics as specialization in Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S) programme. The only required qualification for M.D.S is Bachelor of Dental Surgery ( B.D.S ). The present course for MDS in Orthodontics stands at 3 years in all dental colleges in India which are recognised by the Dental Council of India.

What does an Orthodontist do?

In general, an orthodontist examines, diagnoses and treats dental problems.
This involves straightening and realigning teeth by applying pressure with braces. An orthodontist treats malocclusions (improper bites) and practices dentofacial orthopedics (guiding facial development).

In many cases, the reason for treatment can be purely aesthetic - to improve the appearance of the patient's teeth - but can sometimes be more of a necessity if the problem is a jaw alignment or related issue.

As an orthodontist you will be able to adapt your practice to fit your lifestyle. You could choose to practice as a solo practitioner but could also establish a business with a partner. This allows each associate to enjoy a shorter work week but many orthodontists work weekends and evenings as a high volume of patients are still attending high school during the weekdays. Treating these high school aged patients can be very rewarding - as their smile changes, so does their self confidence.

Remuneration: -

A dental surgeon can earn good amount of money by their own practice. A consultant charges from Rs 250 onwards for cosmetic filling or routine check-up. This may increase up to Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 depending upon the nature of the dental problem. A well experienced dentist can earn around Rs 30,000 to Rs 1, 00,000 or more per month.
