MDS in Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is a field of dentistry, which involves the study of designing, fabricating and installing oral prosthetics. A person who aspires to pursue the specialization course can enroll into post graduation programme in Prosthodontics. Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) (Prosthodontics) is a three-year post graduate degree course, during which a student learns about overall oral cosmetic restoration. There are a number of institutes which offer MDS (Prosthodontics) as a specialization course.

 Candidate planning to enroll into MDS (Prosthodontics) must possess a graduate degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) from an institute recognized by the Dental Council of India. The dental colleges in India offer admission to candidates, on the basis of their scores in national or state level centralized entrance exam, conducted for the course or solely on the basis of merit obtained in the qualifying examination i.e. BDS. After successfully completing MDS (Prosthodontics), one has an option of joining a government or a private hospital or one can even open an independent clinic.

Job Opportunities:
The majority of the job opportunities for a graduate in this field are available in a research institute, colleges, universities, and teaching hospitals. Trained private practitioners can setup their own dental clinic which could help them to gain the confidence and revenue. Graduates who are interested in social service field can join NGOs.  Besides,lots of job opportunities are available in foreign countries for Indian dentists in the countries like Australia, UK and US.

Remuneration: 

A dental surgeon can earn good amount of money by their own practice. A consultant charges from Rs 250 onwards for cosmetic filling or routine check-up. This may increase up to Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 depending upon the nature of the dental problem. A well experienced dentist can earn around Rs 30,000 to Rs 1, 00,000 or more per month.
