MDS in Oral Pathology and Microbiology

Oral pathology is the branch of study which deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is the science which investigates the causes, process and effects of these diseases. The “American Dental Association” uses the term “ Oral  and Maxillofacial Pathology” and describes it the specialty of dentistry and pathology.

And Microbiology is the study of the microorganism, which are unicellular or cell cluster micro organisms. Microbiology typically includes the study of the immune system or immunology.

The M. D. S. in Oral Pathology & Microbiology is a three year Postgraduate program. It is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the nature, characteristics, cause, effects and diagnosis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions and study of the immune system, which facilitates appropriate treatment of the same. The Postgraduate students are trained to attain competence in dealing with the nature of oral diseases, their causes and effects.

They perform routine histopathological evaluations of specimens and also carry out routine diagnostic procedures including cytological, microbiological, other investigations and research projects.

This curriculum is designed so as to enable not only academic and clinical proficiency, but also potentiate the intellectual, rational and social ability of the student, resulting in Oral Pathologists who will excel in patient care.

Duration of the course: 
Three years from the date of commencement of classes.

Course Outlook:

MDS i.e., Master of Dental Surgery in Oral pathology and Microbiology is a post graduation course. The course is of three year full time duration.

Job Prospects:

After completing MDS in Oral Pathology and Microbiology, one can work in the government as well in the private dental hospitals. One can also opt for the post of lecturer in oral pathology and Microbiology department in various institutes. They can also opt for the research institutes and medical colleges as researchers.  They can also apply for the job in medical services of the army, navy, air force , under the ministry of defense.

Remuneration: 

A dental surgeon can earn good amount of money by their own practice. A consultant charges from Rs 250 onwards for cosmetic filling or routine check-up. This may increase up to Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 depending upon the nature of the dental problem. A well experienced dentist can earn around Rs 30,000 to Rs 1, 00,000 or more per month.
